Red Cross Assists Militant Group in Search for Bodies of Israeli Hostages in Gaza Strip

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) confirmed that its representatives joined members of Hamas into zones of Gaza still under IDF authority to support the hunt for the bodies of individuals held captive.

Ceasefire Agreements and Captive Bodies Return

Under the US-brokered ceasefire, which began on October 10, the group is obligated to hand over the remains of all captives as soon as possible. As a reciprocal measure, the Israeli government has agreed to hand over 15 Palestinian bodies for every Israeli body returned.

“Upon the appeal of the involved sides, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) accompanied a party to the conflict as the party looked for the bodies of the deceased beyond the military-established ‘yellow boundary’,” said a representative for the committee.

The spokesperson added: “The parties to the conflict determined the procedures of the operation and entrusted the ICRC to serve as a neutral intermediary. The ICRC was not involved in those negotiations.”

The official further clarified: “The ICRC was did not participate in the search for the deceased nor does it take part in the physical recovery of human remains.”
