This production, however, could coincide too neatly with the carefully constructed version circulated by official channels that, domestically, it functions as a endorsement instead of a critique.

The Crafted Superhero

For years, the Russian political apparatus and its pop-culture machine have collaborated to craft a tailor-made version of the president. This character is a political superhero without age or mistakes, a former spy reframed as a local 007 who always knows beyond what he shows.

Cinematic Reinforcement

One recent example is a television show released last October, directed by a Kremlin supporter. The protagonist is a invented blue-eyed lieutenant colonel selected by fate to “rescue” Russia from disorder. While the character's name a different name, the message is unmistakable: the savior must be a familiar security officer.

International depictions often end up buttressing this identical story instead of debunking it. An adaptation based on a popular book aims to subvert the leader's mythology by presenting him as a symptom but as a symptom, moving the focus to the political machinery around him.

The Fable of the Hesitant President

On screen, Putin is presented as having been picked by powerful oligarchs to steady the nation because he is “a fit former intelligence agent”. They visit him and all but beg him to take the top job. He replies is that he would rather govern from the shadows, seeking enduring influence.

This tale is a key piece of state propaganda: the detached, unwilling mastermind guided by fate. In reality, none of this ever happened.

The Reality of the Casting Call

No one ever begged Putin to accept the role. The position was effectively a selection process with many contenders. Central to this process stood an influential oligarch from the previous administration who expected to run the state de facto.

Interestingly, the shift to depicting him as a “spy” may in part have been triggered by the actor's arrival as James Bond. His harder version led local outlets and online audiences to draw visual parallels with their leader. Mashup posters swapping Craig’s face with his appeared on city centers, feeding the increasing trend to see him as a local secret agent.

A Diplomatic Opportunity?

Given the casting, an actor popular with viewers there, the Kremlin are likely to seize the opportunity to frame his casting as a minor diplomatic triumph. The film's omission of mass protests, the opposition, or prominent activists from its narrative, despite covering the past decade, is a welcome aspect for official messaging.

Domestically, the president is frequently an omnipotent figure who never appears directly. His influence is hinted at through portraits or calls “from above”. Now, he finally acquires a recognizable face—one that may inadvertently echo the exact legends it might seek to examine.
